FBI Special Agent Grahm Coder will discuss the investigation into the disappearance of Shannan Watts and her two young daughters, a high-profile case featured in the Netflix documentary American Murder: The Family Next Door.
Shannan Watts was dropped off at her home in Frederick, Colorado, by a friend at 2:00am on an August night in 2018. However, the next morning she and her daughters were missing. The investigation led attention to quickly focus on Shannan’s husband, Chris Watts, as a primary suspect. Following interviews and a polygraph examination, Chris ultimately confessed to their murders, and was prosecuted. This case study will highlight the lessons learned during the investigation, including interview and interrogation techniques, and the importance of mental health and wellness for violent and family crime investigators.
SA Coder is currently assigned to the Complex Financial Crimes squad in Las Vegas. During his career he has investigated cases involving Mexican Cartel Drug Trafficking, Domestic Terrorism, Crimes against Children/Missing Persons and Violent Crimes/Fugitives. SA Coder has been nominated for multiple awards including the FBI “Directors Award” and the D.O.J. “Attorney General’s Award.” In addition, he has received the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area “Task Force of the Year” Award.
This is a unique opportunity to hear details of the case by SA Coder, who rarely discusses the case to audiences other than law enforcement personnel.
